District Conference 2010
The District Conference Committee is hard at work finalizing plans for this year’s conference. Due to a lack of banquet facilities, this year’s conference will have a different look and feel from most District Conferences. However, the theme is “Make it Memorable” and I will commit to you to do just that. Some of the highlights include:
- A Golf Tournament with 2 man teams competing for the grand prize of a trip to the Rotary International Golf Tournament at St. Andrews Scotland in June, 2011. It is the chance of a lifetime to play one of golf’s great shrines – the old course at St. Andrews. This will be a by the rules, testosterone laden event, where the winner takes all. Clemson said they had five teams that wanted to compete. Fortunately, Charles Warren, Lucas Glover, DJ Trahan and others have already played St. Andrews.
- The dramatic conclusion of the polio fundraiser on Friday afternoon.
- An arts walk between the Westin Poinsett and Falls Park, with dinner in the park. This event will be coordinated by the Metropolitan Arts Council and will include “up close and personal” visits/performances with artists, actors and musicians.
- Gillaine Warne, providing a first hand account of the earthquake in Haiti
- Dacre Stoker, Author of Dracula, the Undead. A distant relative of Bram Stoker, he is donating a portion of the book’s profits to polio.
- The Kenducky Derby
- A video highlighting the service projects and money raised from District 7750
- An International Dinner, with food stations throughout the Westin Poinsett on Saturday night
- A video created by this year’s class of youth exchange students
- Bill Shillito, Executive Director of CART
- Billy Campbell, Greenville native, Ambassadorial Scholar and former CEO of the Discovery Channel. Mr. Campbell was on the US Air flight that landed in the Hudson.
As if this is not enough, we are still working on some more headliners. In the meantime, please pencil in April 30 to May 2nd on your calendar, or better yet, just go to www.rotary7750.org, sign in and register. And consider enjoying the entire conference by staying at the beautiful Westin Poinsett. The Westin is Greenville’s only four star hotel, and one of 22 worldwide historic Westins. The Committee has secured rooms at the unheard of rate of $129 per night!!!! I’m not sure what it took to negotiate such a rate, but it probably helped that Poinsett General Manager, Fabian Unterzaucher, is a Rotarian. |
