District Conference: April 30, May 1, May 2
The theme, as has been my theme for the whole year, is “Make It Memorable.” The Conference will begin Friday night with an arts walk, then dinner at the falls, then music by the cast of Rock N Roll Heaven, then dancing in the park to your favorite music.
The first plenary session Saturday morning will include the hopefully sober Australian GSE Team, Pecha Kucha presentations on an array of District activities. We will also have Jefferson Pike talking about the incredibly successful First Knight program at Powdersville Middle School. The Westin is objecting to Sir Jefferson bringing his horse into the Hotel, but he will be parked out front.
After a break, the second Plenary session will feature Gary Goforth on his year in Afghanistan, Gillaine Warne on the incredible work she has done in Haiti before and after the earthquake and Bram Stoker, Great Grand Nephew of the Bram Stoker, author of Dracula. Bram has written a book called Dracula the Undead. He will talk about his relative and the history of Dracula. Dacre is a Rotarian and a portion of the book’s proceeds go to Polio. We close the session with a video put together by this year’s Youth Exchange team.
The afternoon will be on your own, but it is expected that most participants will walk the two short blocks from the Hotel to Falls Park for the 5th running of the Kenducky Derby. You can also tour various Greenville museums, shop or do what you want to do.
Saturday evening will be completely different from any previous Banquet. Our Presidential Rep will give his talk during the cocktail party. We will also run a video of all of the club service projects and fundraising efforts. I can assure you the total dollars and hours will be impressive. Dinner will then be distributed from international food stations throughout the lobby and mezzanine of the hotel. Get your food and go to a table. After dinner, we will have music and a silent/live auction with some really good stuff.
Sunday morning will begin with a memorial service, then an ecumenical service with world class violinist Sun Eun Lee playing Bach. She will be accompanied by Stan Starnes. That session will close with a slide show that Claire Kuhl put around an ecumenical prayer.
The Plenary session will feature Billy Campbell, former Ambassadorial Scholar, former President of the Discovery Channel, and passenger on the US Air Flight that landed on the Hudson. After Billy will be Bill Shilito, the Executive Director of CART.
The closing session will feature Becky Faulkner talking about next year and next year’s District Conference. We will close, as always, with Auld Lang Syne.
Registration can be done online at www.rotary7750.org. Or call me. We have extended the $179 early bird registration until April 15. As well, the Westin Poinsett still has great rooms for conference rate of $129 per night.
We are still looking for advertisers for the Conference Bulletin and sponsors for events. We will not have Door Prizes this year, but we have asked each President to provide one item for the silent or live auction. We would love to have these gifts indigenous to your area (e.g. a weekend at Hickory Knob.)
Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament, Friday, April 30
This is a separate event from the District Conference. It just happens to be at the same time. Two man teams will compete for the chance to win an almost all expense paid trip to Scotland to play in the 2011 Rotary International Golf Tournament at St. Andrews, the Home of Golf. We have nine teams competing for the prize.
In addition, the Rotary Club of Greenville will hold a fellowship tournament at the same time. This is open to two man teams that just want to play for fun. Handicaps will not be required for this portion. A $75 entry fee includes lunch, a barbecue afterwards and prizes for long drive, closest to the pin, etc. Private wagers are encouraged.
Again, you can sign up at www.Rotary7750.org.
Awards Luncheon, Friday, April 30
This is also a separate event from the District Conference. (Do you now see why I owed the Presidents an apology.) We will be handing out awards for Foundation contributions, Literacy, CART and the Harriett Skinner Club of the Year Awards. Entertainment will be by the CAFÉ and THEN SOME players. This will be a regular meeting for the Greenville Clubs. WE hope to have at least one representative from every club.
All Presidents should complete their Presidential and Governor citations and submit them to you Assistant Governor.
